CHAPTER: I 1st page sample...

Introduction:

Child development or developmental psychology is a branch of knowledge concerned with the nature of the developmental process and significant structural, functional, and behavioral changes occur in children during development.

Very often child psychology and developmental psychology are used synonymously, but there is a difference between them. Child psychology is the branch of psychology that studies behavioral patterns and behavioral changes that occurs during the life span.

On the other hand, developmental psychology is concerned with the growth pattern and developmental process. Although developmental psychology is an independent science, it is also a subunit of child psychology. Developmental psychology is not only concerned with interpreting and predicting developmental patterns but also concerned with child guidance and counseling.

Development is a continuous process and developmental psychology based on lawful and observable successive stages of on-going growth. Both heredity predispositions and environmental faculties contribute to the process of change.

Growth and Development:

The most debatable terms in child psychology are “Growth” and “Development”. Growth refers to the quantitative changes that occur in physical development. Whereas development refers to the qualitative changes that appear in a child’s behavior leading towards maturation.

Every child undergoes a series of changes in size such as height and weight etc. Similarly, the child also undergoes the qualitative changes that occur during development such as, sensorimotor, pre-conceptual, concrete operational, and formal operational changes.

Principles of Development:

Despite individual differences among children, behavioral development follows this pattern.

  •          Development is similar for all children.
  •          Behavioral development proceeds from general to specific.
  •          Development is a continuous process.
  •          Development proceeds at a different rate for every child.
  •          There is aa correlation rather than compensation in development.
  •          All children do not reach the point of development at the same age.
  •          Early development is more important than later development.
  •          Development proceeds stage by stage.
  •          Some behaviors are acceptable at one stage are not acceptable as normal at other stages.
